  1. SYLVIA A. SCHER Says:

Are you the same Mike Hurley whose comments were printed in the NY Times of Feb. 6, 2011? If so, then you might be interested in my time in Orono during the l960s.

My late husband, Dr. Saul Scher, headed the TV-film division at UMO and was (along with some other profs) quite disheartened by the lack of foreign films being shown in Bangor theaters– as well as the indifference shown by his students to these films. So not only did he show foreign films in class, he inaugurated free summer film festivals at UMO where he screened subtitled films for kids. ‘The Red Balloon’ and ‘ Loose Change’come to mind. (The sub-titles were read by volunteers from the drama dept.)

Older students, many of them who were Elderhostel attendees, enjoyed the films and the forums that were held after the screenings. In the winter, there were Saturday AM films for local kids as well as children from Bangor and Vesey (spelling?)

I realize that theatres need to bring in money but perhaps small town inhabitants need to be educated and exposed to them via FREE programs . Would the Chamber of Commerce sponsor something? A grant from an Arts org. or Bowdoin or Bates?

My son lives with his family in Westbrook, Me. and I think he might remember those happy times and our trips to Camden to see movies that we could not get in Bangor!

    Good luck! And happy viewing!
